Life in a Hard Place

Why is life so hard? Sometimes life grows out of a hard place like this tree growing out of rock up in the mountains. How can a tree survive the obstacles of light oxygen, cool temperatures, no soil for nutrients, and no sun exposure for most of the year due to cloud coverage? But this lone tree has done it and is surviving against the odds.

One of my sisters has been battling a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer this past year called Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Her odds of survival are less than 50% and life expectancy of only 1 to 1 1/2 years. This diagnosis just slapped us in the face. How do we move forward? How do we deal with this as we are ill equipped? So many questions…

The road has been long and scary. The time has been long and the chemo treatments have been brutal. Yet…we keep praying and believing that she will beat cancer. Today was her 6th chemo treatment. These days come so very quickly. Today I am still trying to find something positive when life has given us something so cruel.

My sister lives in an area with some of the top doctors and I view that as a positive. She has a very rare and aggressive form of cancer so many doctors are aiding in her treatment. The chemo has been brutal and the side effects horrific. But somehow, she is like this tree growing out of the rock against the odds.

Today…was a great day! Today, she found out that the chemo treatments have kicked cancer’s butt. She has won this round. She is not out of the woods and has a long way to go, but the cancer is shrinking and she continues to grow in her determination to beat this. She is a real fighter and she is persevering and overcoming the adversity she has been given. But tonight…I sit here and reflect on this tree and how it has survived against the odds and I know that my sister will defy her odds and be cancer free by 2018.

Happy New Year 2017!

Happy New Year 2017!

Do you make New Year’s resolutions or goals? I don’t like to make them at the first of the year. I prefer to think about what my goals and resolutions are before the end of the year. Usually, in December, I start focusing on working towards the goals. This way, I don’t feel a lot of anxiety or failure if I flounder at the beginning of the year.

To me…it is just like dieting. Nobody wants to start a diet on a Monday…that just sets you up to fail. However, as part of my goals for 2017, I am not going to diet. I am making a lifestyle change. I am going to eat healthier; make better choices; eat smaller portions; increase my water intake; and don’t deprive myself of life’s yummy treats…just eat in moderation. This is achievable and I don’t set myself up with unrealistic goals.

However, this is not my primary goal of 2017. The world can be such a cruel place and there is a need for kindness. I am going to find something positive in every day no matter how small or big it is. I am going to be the change I need to see in the world. I am going to reach out and offer kindness to everyone. Random acts of kindness warms my heart and I feel this is something small I can do to change a person’s day.

I have several goals for the year and I am not going to share them all in this post. I just wanted to get back to using my blog and start sharing life with others. I think sharing is caring and I can’t wait to get back in this wonderful community of sharing with you all.

I wish you all a year full of love and happiness.

bissel symphony

My favorite new cleaning tool! What a time saver! What used to take me 45-60 minutes including dry time only takes me 10 minutes including dry time with this tool.

Throw away the mop, mop bucket, and chemical…all you need is this Bissel. The steam mop disinfects without the use of harsh chemicals. All you need is this steam mop…you just add water. The pads are machine washable and it comes with 4 pads. 2 scrubber pads for ceramic tile flooring and 2 regular pads for hardwood and sealed laminate floors.

TJ Maxx Shoe Haul (Spring 2015)

April 2015 059I made one stop at TJ Maxx and made a haul. Boy…I hit the jackpot! I happened across designer shoes at an incredible deal! I purchased a pair of Tory Burch Flats, 3 pairs of Coach shoes, and one pair of Aerosol shoes.

The Tory Burch Flats are very comfortable. I probably should have gone up a half of a size larger but they looked wide and I thought they would have been too big. This is my first pair of Tory Burch shoes and the thing I like the most is the color and the fact that they are flats. Being 6 feet tall…I have had such trouble finding flat shoes…flat shoes that are comfortable I mean.

April 2015 061 April 2015 062Ok…I got a little crazy here. I didn’t need two pairs of Coach shoes. I had trouble picking a pair…I had more silver/grey/black clothing but I have been getting more brown/gold clothing. It was too hard so I caved and bought both. I knew if I didn’t buy them both I would have regretted not buying the pair I left behind.

I did get a heck of a deal on them. I paid 1/3 of the value of these shoes…but still, I didn’t need them. I felt that I had hit the jackpot on shoes and since I have been skunked the last three times I had been to TJ Maxx I rationalized it.

April 2015 060This is the Coach pair I had to have! It was love at first sight. They didn’t scream “I am Coach shoes” they just looked like a great pair of silver/grey shoes. They are the most comfortable pair of shoes I own! Even more comfortable than all of my Merrells! Now that is saying something. Sometimes my love for TJ Maxx is so deep. Is it weird that I love Tj Maxx or that I love these shoes almost more than life itself? Well maybe not that strong…but comfort on your feet on a long day makes a world of a difference. Way to go Coach…way to go Tj Maxx!

April 2015 074I purchased my first pair of Aerosoles. I have never heard anyone talk about this brand of shoe before but these were perfect for the outfit I was planning on wearing for the second day of the conference. My feet were killing me from the shoes I had worn on day one of the conference. So I decided to throw caution to the wind and dive in and scoop up these babies. They were very comfortable in the store…so what did I have to lose? I still had the terrible shoes at the hotel that didn’t live to see the next day. Yes…I gave those old shoes a guided tour to the trash.

To my surprise, these were very comfortable and my feet thanked me all day that day. I asked a few of the ladies at the conference if they had ever had a pair of Aerosoles and they said yes…they are awesome! It seems strange that I hadn’t heard of them before…or maybe I had and it just fell out of my brain. My brain gets so full some days that some stuff just has to spill out. But seriously, I will be purchasing Aerosoles again in the future…they are a good shoe worth trying.

Hello November…

novemberHello November…what a beautiful month. The weather has started to turn colder as there is a definite nip in the air. The leaves are crisp and crunchy blanketing the ground.

Opening weekend of deer hunting…which around here seems to be an unspoken holiday. I look out my window and the badge of orange is wore proudly in the fields.

It is not my favorite time of year…but I just imagine Elmer Fudd out there looking for “wabbit” and go on with my day.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner which is always a great holiday full of great family and friends. Welcome November and it that you bring.

Another Life Lesson…Thank You Dr. Seuss

Dr. SeussToday was a day of mixed emotions. Today it is official, my mother sold our family home. It is like an end of an era. I am excited for her as I know she really enjoys her new place, but I am sure she had a lump in her throat when she signed those papers today. I know I did.

I wasn’t really attached to the house but the memories that filled it. It really hasn’t felt like home since my dad passed away. It was just a new normal that we were forced to accept.

So many things are tied to the memories in that house. The laughter, the love, the stories, the music…oh, the music…how I would love to hear my dad play one last song. Just to hear his laugh again.

Today is an exciting day…and I am surprised that the sense of loss of my dad has crept back up and slapped me in the face. I can only imagine the feelings my mother is feeling while she pretends to not be bothered by the events of the day.

I will not cry because its over…I will smile because it happened. The memories remain, the love remains, and the stories will still remain.

Just another step in the transitions in life…embrace them and don’t look back. You always need to keep moving forward.  To all of you who have been through this journey and to all of those whose journey has yet to begin…do as Dr. Seuss has said, “Don’t cry because its over, smile because it happened”.
